Child Psychologists

Child psychologists help support children, young people and families with a wide range of mental health difficulties including anxiety, stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), low self-esteem, anger, low mood, depression and managing trauma and bereavement. They can also help with behavioural difficulties, sleep difficulties, managing tics and tourettes, and problems associated with neurodevelopment disorders. They may help to diagnose and help support people with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Clinical Psychologists are trained across the lifespan, although some choose to specialise in working with children, young people and families and offer evidenced-based interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye-Movement Desensitisation (EMDR) and Systemic Therapy, specific for these populations.

Educational Psychologists offer support to children and young people experiencing difficulties that are impacting on learning and their ability to access education.

Have a browse of the services available in your area if you still are not sure which type of psychologist to contact. Alternatively, send someone a message and ask some questions about the support they can offer!

“There’s nothing worse than feeling like you can’t help your child. I knew that my daughter’s development was not typical for her age. She really seemed to struggle with social interactions and our world was becoming so stressful. A child psychologist was recommended by a friend. After a comprehensive initial assessment, we were offered an autism assessment and our daughter received a diagnosis. We are so pleased we went down this route – our daughter is much better supported in school and at home and now we have lots of strategies and support to access.
